KUALA LUMPUR: When Tan Sri S.M. Nasimuddin S.M. Amin was diagnosed with lung cancer in January, he told his close family members to keep news of his ailment a secret.

His elder brother Datuk S.M. Sharifuddin, who was one of those who knew about Nasimuddin’s condition, said only close family members knew about it.

Sharifuddin, 57, who is Naza Motor Trading Sdn Bhd director, said Nasimuddin found out about his condition when he was in Los Angeles, where his wife was undergoing treatment for cancer.

“He told me that he was fighting back and that he will return to Malaysia. I’m still in shock and sad that he had to go so early,” he told reporters after attending his brother’s funeral in Hulu Langat yesterday.

Sharifuddin said he last met Nasimuddin, 53, when family members celebrated the latter’s birthday on Jan 27.

“He left for the United States soon after to accompany his wife to attend medical treatment without any one of us realising that he was also sick,” he said in between sobs.

Nasimuddin’s eldest son S.M. Faisal said his father reminded the family to take care of each other and their businesses.

“He told us to continue working hard for the Naza Group of Companies. His last words were: ‘Naza is your family. Whatever you do, you must help to contribute to humanity’. That was what he believed in.”

Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who paid his last respects to Nasimuddin at the Federal Territory mosque, said the late Naza chairman had created opportunities for a lot of people including those involved in small businesses.
